Has SWTOR been brought down by a hack?

October 12, 2012

While the news sites are busy writing about Update 1.5 going to the test server (and once again, nothing for the solo PvE player), something of far more concern has happened to Star Wars the Old Republic. All North American and European servers mysteriously crashed several hours ago, and BioWare is apparently clueless as to why.

Their most recent Twitter post is even more disconcerting:

We still have no ETA for when the servers will be available again. We will update this thread again within an hour:

Note they say they will update within an hour, but this was posted three hours previously!

On the forums it is conjectured that the game has been the target of some kind of hacking attack. This may or may not be true, but in the absence of anything from BioWare, rumor is bound to spread. The fact alone that the game could collapse for several hours is serious enough.

No more unique Legacy names

September 6, 2012

The most interesting part of yesterday’s patch:

  • Legacy names are no longer unique. New Legacies that are created are now able to use a name that is already in use on the server. All players will be able to rename their Legacies once, at no cost, in a future update.

Now if only we didn’t need unique character names (since we also have the Legacy names) so we could get back the original names we had before we were forced to change servers.

The next update – once again just for people who play in groups

August 31, 2012

The developers of SWTOR seem to think that everyone either plays PvP (Player versus Player) and/or play in groups. The person who wants to, or has to, play solo, and doesn’t want to play PvP is often neglected. We’ve been waiting for the promised new levels and new planet beyond the current end game at level 50. But the developers seem to have other goals. From

This Operation introduces the next tier of progression in Star Wars: The Old Republic, including a new set of PvE gear. The hard difficulty mode for Terror From Beyond is balanced for players wearing a full set of Campaign gear, which can be acquired from Operation: Explosive Conflict. Augments will become increasingly more important the deeper you get into Terror from Beyond. Story mode will be available for players who just want to see the sights, but it’s no walk in the park.

Terror from Beyond will be available in Game Update 1.4!

The game is reportedly bleeding players. Maybe this will keep the hardcore gamers around. It doesn’t offer much for those with less time on their hands who have reached level 50 and are trying to find a reason to stay in the game.
